8 out of the 15 aspirants who were in the race for various SRC portfolios have withdrawn from the vetting and appointment process set in place to get new SRC executives.
2 it of the 5 presidential aspirants Abdul-Lahie Abdul-Rahim Naa Ninche and Ishmael Nii Lante ; the two General Secretary aspirants, Joyce Afelik (Gen. Sec.Hopeful), Patrick Abesiyine Anyebuno (Gen. Sec. Hopeful; 1 out of the 3 Wocom aspirants Farida Yeboah; 2 of the 3 organizing secretary hopefuls Desmond Boahene and Erasmus Albert Mensah and Godfred Zina, one out of the two External Affairs Commissioners have all withdrawn from race.
In a communique addressed to the student body as well as the dean of students and management of the institute, aspirants site sidelining of principles that do away with the right of students to elect their leaders as a main cause of withdrawal.
"Several institutions have held online elections or put in place an interim committee that will organise an election when school reopens. All these steps are hinged on the principle of not taking away the right of students to elect their leaders" the statement said.
The aspirants also raise a case of a legal backing for the work of the committee , making it unconstitutional.
"The current vetting committee, whose composition we got to know less than 24 hours to the beginning of the vetting process, has no constitutional instrument backing it hence rendering it illegal to carry out the task it has abrogated to itself"
'As a team, we have not been enthused with the secrecy that has engulfed the work of the "committee" and we were hoping that things will take the right course. Unfortunately, that has not happened', the statement adds.
The last issue brought forward in the communique has to do with the composition of the committee and a possible conflict of interest that arises from the provision in the working document of the vetting and appointment committee memo titled "VETTING OF SRC EXECUTIVES 2020' which said under the section titled "Resolving of Dosputes" that "Any person or persons or group of persons who are aggrieved with any decision of the Vetting Committee shall follow the due procedures as set-out in Article 20 Clauses 2 and 3 of GIJ-SRC constitution for their concerns to be addressed" ad it turns out the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Adelaide Adu-Gyamfi is a member of the committee.
Whiles this has come up however, it is unknown for now how vetting which is supposed to commence today will be affected.
