Discussions have gone on about the best means to get a new leadership.
Particularly, who serves on that board which will act at the electoral commission?
Initial suggestions also went towards making GA which is a representative assembly of all students of GIJ to form an electoral college that will see to the election of new executives.
However, this was found to be problematic as some aspirants are themselves members of the assembly whiles others aren't.
Issues of accessibility to.the college (especially for those who aren't members) and others came up.
In short, that wouldn't be a level playing field for all aspirants.
Views that have flowed in include the possibility of resorting to voting online as has been done in other jurisdictions. However, this suggestion seems not to be selling well as issues like cost, internet accessibility and others have been raised against it.
It looks most likely that the option of an interim committee or a similar group will be set in place to handle affairs as are handed to them.
In the course of the discussions, the dean of students affairs gave a hint that seems to point to the fact that school will reopen in November, asking students to make use of the period available to get themselves adequately prepared for the coming semester.
Discussions are still ongoing.
Background
This crunch meeting has become necessary because of the major roadblock of COVID-19 which has brought the SRC at a standstill following the truncation of the semester, making elections within the timeframe set by the constitution of GIJ-SRC impossible.
Stay tuned for more updates.
